We have been learning about the baptism of the Holy Spirit for a while now. It is very clear that only born again believers can be baptized with the Holy Spirit. We have also examined different ways in which a believer can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We said you can receive the Holy Spirit personally in you prayer time, you can also receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit in a corporate meeting. Also a spirit filled believer who knows how to minister the baptism of the Holy Spirit can minister it you. We saw examples of all these in the bible.
It is important that we should know that the infilling of the Holy Spirit is not meant to be a once in a life time experience for us believers. Religious tend to make us think that as long as someone has been filled with the Holy Spirit that is all. We can be filled with the Holy Spirit over and over again.
You know by now that the early believers were first filled with the Holy Spirit with accompanying speaking in tongues in chapter two of Acts.
Acts 2: 1- 4
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat on each of them. And they were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. NKJV
This was there very first experience with the Holy Spirit. Each one of them was filled with the Holy Spirit and they spoke in other tongues. However this was not the only time this same set of believers were filled with the Holy Spirit.
Look at what happened in chapter four of the book of Acts. Herod, Pontius Pilate, the gentiles and the people of Israel started persecuting the believers after the upper room experience that transformed them their Christian experience. Peter and John were arrested for preaching Jesus. They eventually released them. When they got back to the other believers they reported all the threats of the chief priests and elders. Therefore the disciples prayed. Something significant happened when they prayed. These believers who have received the Holy Spirit before were filled with the Holy Spirit again.
Acts 4: 31
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness. NKJV
These believers were first filled with the Holy Spirit in chapter two of Acts. Now the Holy Spirit filled them again
It is very clear that we can be filled with the Holy Spirit over and over again. We should not stop at being filled with the Holy Spirit once. We should regularly ask the Holy Spirit to fill us afresh. This will help to keep the fire of the Lord in our heart ablaze especially in the face of opposition and persecution to our Christian life. At the point where these believers were filled with the Holy Spirit again they were facing great challenges and opposition to their faith. They were being threatened and persecuted. Some of them have been arrested and just released. They have also been warned not to preach Jesus again. I believe they needed the fresh filling of the Holy Spirit to keep them upbeat for the Lord in the middle of all these challenges. In fact at that point it appeared they were almost loosing courage and boldness with which they were preaching the gospel. How do I know this? Look at what they said in that chapter four of the book of Acts.
Acts 4: 23
And being let go, they went to their own companions and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said to them. So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said…Now, Lord, look on their threats, and GRANT TO YOUR SERVANTS THAT WITH ALL BOLDNESS THEY MAY SPEAK YOUR WORD… NKJV
Immediately after they prayed this prayer they were filled with the Holy Spirit again.
I believe we should regularly pray that the Holy Spirit should fill us again. We all need a fresh renewal of the Holy Spirit within us from time to time.
